Blick plaster painting7/2/2023 ![]() Wood tannins in old-growth wood, knot holes and woods like cedar and redwood can take much longer to show through so you need to assume a stain blocking primer is needed. If after 24 hours you don’t see any bleed through then you should be good, but you need to give it some time to fully dry before assuming your coverage was successful. If you get into a situation that won’t cover with a traditional primer then before you paint, apply a coat of one of these primers. You also need denatured alcohol to clean your brushes, but its stain blocking power is unlike anything else I have seen. It is only for interior and “spot” exterior use so you can’t fully coat exterior projects with this especially in hot climates which does limit it unfortunately. I’ve used this to defeat heavy tannins on old-growth woods or covering old finishes that can sometime bleed pink through other primers. That’s fancy paint speak to say that nothing get through this primer. It is a denatured alcohol based primer the uses pigmented shellac to hide stains. Latex paints have stain blocking abilities, but in my experience they only provide marginal coverage compared to their solvent based cousins.Ĭertain stains will appear to be covered upon first application, but then bleed through the paint months or even years after application. Typically, these are oil-based primers or alcohol-based primers that come with the extreme stain blocking that you need. A stain blocking primer is designed to provide more robust coverage and prevent stains from bleeding through newly applied layers of paint. There is probably no paint more capable than shellac to block any stain.Some primers are meant for simple preparation of the surface in order to help the paint get a good hold and last for years. Shellac is a material made by beetles and used in both nail varnish and paint The beauty of using shellac-based primers to block a stain is the effectiveness and speed of which the product dries. The fumes may be a little overwhelming and it can’t be healthy for you. Whilst this type of product will work, I wouldn’t advise using it indoors. Some of the old-school decorators I know use pliolite-based masonry paint to block a stain. You can buy coverstain from loads of trade outlets but unless you have a trade account it may be better to purchase it online. Look out for Zinsser CoverStain, or any oil-based undercoat. Just make sure if you are applying it inside over a large area, you keep your work area nice and ventilated. Now we are talking!! These products are the most effective at blocking and covering stains such as grease, water marks, heavy nicotine and graffiti. Note, this product will not block a stain as effectively as some of the products listed below, but if you want longevity in a room susceptible to mold growth then this is the product for you. The other advantage is Zinsser Perma White is durable enough to use on ceilings, walls and woodwork and it can also be tinted. ![]() ![]() It is the perfect product for a bathroom or kitchen. Again, it will block out mild stains, doubles up as an emulsion and has mold inhibitors, meaning it will combat mould and mildew growth in the future. Just don’t expect miracles, any heavy stains need to be dealt with by something a bit more robust.Īs paint technology is advancing, we now have all these new “all-in-one” products that are really quite impressive.Īnother fine example of this is Zinsser Perma White. This doesn’t mean they don’t have their uses a ceiling which is affected by nicotine from cigarette smoke for example. These are quite simply labeled “stain block” and are by far the easiest option, however, may not be as effective on harder stains such as water-marks. It is often cheaper to buy stain bloks online, so I’ll link to websites I use so you can find what you need.Įach of the main paint manufacturers have their own water-based version of stain block.
